RBC’s Cincinnati/Studio
Saturday we played for the first time at RBC’s in cincinnati on main street. we arrived a little early and ended up waiting for someone with a key.
i kind of like the way a club looks when its empty.
with the chairs upside down and the bar all shiny.
RBC’s has a nice vibe.
the stage is deep but not tall.
the other bands were nice enough to let us backline the drums. ellison, langus, basement what, and one other band that i didn’t see and can’t remember the name of because i suck.
unfortunately our sound guy jerry was out of town so we didn’t do a soundcheck. ack. bleh. blah. can’t say that was the best thing. jerry, we missed you so. oh so. oh so much. jerry, why have you forsaken us for your skiing trip? please come home. we beg of you.

i think this is my why isn’t anything working pose. due to some problems getting the lines for the cello and acoustic guitar going, our set time was delayed until about 1:30 in the morning. the last time we did that was at skullys in columbus. the one great thing about playing at 1:30 in the morning, is that you can sound terrible and it doesn’t matter much. everyone is either asleep or intoxicated. and occasionally both. actually i think we played alright. i blew my voice out a little. haven’t done that in a while, but at least that means i was singing like i meant it. or it means i was singing with extremely poor technique. or both.
this is my good friend travis playing the guitar. i met travis in the sixth grade. we played dungeons and dragons and frisbee. that was then.
recently, he discovered that his eyebrow is still pierced enough to allow a bar bell eyebrow ring thing in there, despite having not worn it for the last year. so i guess he’s going to start wearing it again. i guess. you know…that was really interesting when trav told me about it, but maybe it’s losing something here on the journal. probably. sorry about that.

after the show i talked with two girls who may have been hitting on me. at least one of them. neat. then again, one of them did mention something about being into johnny depp, and they had been drinking, so maybe they were just super confused. i don’t know. a couple months ago new years eve, a guy on a train in atlanta talked to me for 20 minutes about how i looked like that dude in blow (the movie). then he wanted to know if i actually sold coccain. i actually do not. later, he told me, “i knew it was either blow or music.” strangers can often be incredibly perceptive.
sunday, i was in the studio finishing up modern girl. i took some pictures of me but they were not very good. i did take this cool picture of some faders though. possibily the best picture of faders i’ve ever taken. and believe it or not, i’ve taken a lot of them.

if you have ordered the new July For Kings CD Nostalgia from CDbaby.com and its arrival is a week or two overdue, fear not. we sold out but the new shipment from the manufacturer is going straight to cdbaby this week. then they’ll get them out to you.
thanks a ton for everybody who has been buying CD’s. please tell your friends and enemies about it. it just occured to me that i may have never mentioned it here–we made it to the #1 seller for a week on CDbaby.com. (a few weeks ago actually). that kicks ass. they are the largest seller of independent music on the internet. if i were the kind of guy who emphaticly yelled stuff like “boo-ya” when i felt particularly happy, that may have been one of those times.
i like your sleeves. they’re big.
